Athletics Federation of Nigeria president, Solomon Ogba stated that he and his fellow board members are keen to sustain the favorable results recorded in the passing year.
Ogba stated that the pockets of achievements has put Nigeria in the 19th position of the IAAF world rankings of athletics countries, while on the African continent Nigeria was third. He suggested that it will be a disservice to the efforts by the AFN to revive the sport, if the these results were not maintained or improved upon. “We are starting next season on a high note. This is because we must have to either improve upon our results or maintain the standard we have achieved,” said the former Delta State commissioner for sports.
Consequently, he listed that high performance standard will be set for all the events to be organised by the AFN in 2014.
“We are going to set standards for all our events. The golden league, the athletics championships and others.
“There must be a mark to be achieved by the athletes if they hope to participate in these events.
“We need our athletes to be coming up with podium performances. If they have to do this, then they must have to achieve the standards that we are going to set.”
Ogba added that the federation will support any athlete that is ready to aim for world standards.
“We need the athletes to give their best and they will get all the support they deserve. We know some that are promising, but they need to get to a certain level to be in the world bracket,” said the AFN boss.
