The Senate of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has sacked all academic staff on its payroll for failure to return to classrooms, the Nigeria Tribune has reported.
The institution also announced that the dismissal took immediate effect; Monday December 2, 2013.
Chike Ezenwa, FUTO Public Relations Officers (PRO), who confirmed the development, said the Senate of the university had declared all the positions of academic staff in the institution vacant, adding that they would be advertised starting from December 2, 2013( Monday).
He further explained that the Senate council had already compiled the list of vacant positions in the school, adding that those willing to resume would be adequately protected.
Reacting, the FUTO branch of the Academic Staff of Universities Union, ASUU, declared that any attempt to break their ranks would be strongly resisted by their members.
A communique issued by the chapter yesterday urged members to ignore the resumption notice by FUTO management, adding that it would not resume academic activities until the Federal Government implements the resolution it entered with the Union.
